The Dung Beetle, What a Marvelous Creature. Essay Example For Students

The Dung Beetle, What a Marvelous Creature. Essay It took me many hours of thinking back to my past to figure out who or what I was going tomake a tribute speech over. Then I thought back to my childhood to what I enjoyed doing themost. I remember the great times I had with my mother, and how she would always get me thepackage of candy I would ask for when we went shopping. My mother would make a good tributespeech I thought to myself, but then I thought of the few times I was out in my grandfatherspasture, and how I would see a little bug rolling dung. The Dung beetle, what a marvelous creature. We will write a custom essay on The Dung Beetle, What a Marvelous Creature. specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Now, you may be wondering why I have chosen this topic for a tribute speech, or maybe why Iwould even consider talking about it at all, but do you realize what an important role these beetlesplay all around the world. I remember several days when I was young that I would just go for a walk in mygrandfathers pasture. I would enjoy the quiet walks, and sometimes try to scare the cows, butmore often than not, I would end up stopping to watch dung beetles frantically work on a big cowpat. I remember how disgusting it appeared, but I was just fascinated at the concept of cow poopbeing rolled into balls and taken away by bugs. To realize why dung beetles are so important, youmust first know a few facts about them. Dung beetles are named after their delight in rolling updung. Dung beetles utilize the dung of cows, horses, rabbits, deer, sheep, and many otheranimals. How many of you think dung beetles actually eat manure? The answer is yes. Dungbeetles just love fresh dung. They shove the dung into their mouths, squeeze it, and drink thejuices that come streaming out! The solid parts of the dung are squeezed for a second time in theirjaws, and then swallowed. If there are any eggs that flies might have la id inside the dung, thissqueezing action kills them. Now, before you say Gross! think about this: There are millions ofanimals on this planet, and they all produce waste. People take care of the problem throughcomplicated sanitation systems. But in nature, the waste from all the animals has to decompose. Dung beetles help speed up the process. There are more than 20,000 different kinds of dungbeetles. They may feed on plants, dead animals and manure. Dung, along with everything else thatlives in it, is the major food of the dung beetle. In fact African dung beetles head for hot steamingcow pats even before they hit the ground. They are attracted by the gas coming out of the back endof the cow. Within minutes or even seconds, the beetles are already burrowing into the warm dung. Within hours, or at the very most, a few days, the cow pat has vanished. All that is left is freshlyturned-over soil. Scientists have counted more than 7,000 dung beetles in a single mass of freshelephant dung. The importance of dung beetles cannot be overestimated. Every cow produces 7tons of dung a year (imagine the amount of space this would take up if it was left to build up andfester!) and yet this dung is rapidly removed by dung beetles and the grassy fields are soon left freeof dung.I hope that you have leaned why the dung beetle should be respected, and given tributemore often. Not only do dung beetles play a vital role in breaking down dung and incorporating itinto the soil, but they also provide a great form of childhood entertainment. (To add to the effect, pass out some Buterfinger BBs or some malt balls before you gie the speech.)

Vacuum Definition and Examples

Vacuum Definition and Examples Vacuum Definition A vacuum is a volume that encloses little or no matter. In other words, it is a region that has a gaseous pressure much lower than that of atmospheric pressure.A partial vacuum is a vacuum with low amounts of matter enclosed. A total, perfect, or absolute vacuum has no matter enclosed. Sometimes this type of vacuum is referred to as free space. The term vacuum comes from the Latin vacuus, which means empty. Vacuus, in turn, comes from the word vacare, which means be empty. Common Misspellings vaccum, vaccuum, vacuume Vacuum Examples Vacuum tubes are devices, usually made of glass, that contain very low gas pressures inside the tube.Space is considered a vacuum. Space does contains matter, but the pressure is much lower than what you would find on a planet, for example.A vacuum cleaner sucks up debris because it creates a pressure difference between the area to be cleaned and the suction tube.Your lungs intake air when your diaphragm drops, creating a partial vacuum in the alveoli of the lungs, causing air to rush in.

A New Housing Development in the North Essex Assignment - 1

A New Housing Development in the North Essex - Assignment Example A different types of property mix found in these areas, whether the property infrastructure differs between these areas, the cost comparison of different properties in these areas and any interesting aspect near these areas that can add value to the aforesaid property and finally what are the issues how the total pricing of a property may be considered. It is an accepted fact in the Real Estate industry that the price of any property will vary with location; total carpet area, amenities and value additions like nearby supermarkets, swimming pool, and open space. Hence each variable must be considered while proposing a new establishment both for cost effectiveness and customer focus (Pagourtzi et al, 2003). Data Collection: We have considered housing properties in Colchester, Mersea Island, and Jaywick and details were collected from http://www.rightmove.co.uk/.We selected 58 properties in Jaywick, 60 in Mersea Island and 59 in Colchester so a total of 178 properties were selected. The distribution was more or less equal. For the above analysis and comparison, t-tests and ANOVAs were conducted and the p-value was noted. The hypothesis was that if the p-value is less than 0.05 it will mean that there is a significant difference between the observations and the observation has not taken place due to chance factors of random sampling and if the p-value is more than 0.05 it will mean that there is a no significant difference between the observations and the observation has taken place due to chance factors of random sampling (Warne et al, 2012). Further, a multiple regression equation was conducted to find how does pricing of a property relate to the various independent variables like bedrooms, parking space, and others. The equation was done through the software based on R programming language (Wessa, 2014).

Your vision of leadership (Double Weighted) Assignment

Your vision of leadership (Double Weighted) - Assignment Example Various theories of leadership have been developed, and various styles of leadership have been embraced. There are various theories and models of leadership that have been formulated. It has also been evidenced that individuals portray various leadership styles (Choosing the Right Approach for the Situation, 2015). In fact, great leaders are able to combine the various styles of leadership to achieve their objectives and set targets. Naturalist theory of leadership establishes that leaders are born (Leadership theories, leadership models and leadership principles, 2015). According to the theory, the traits of a great leader can be seen from the early years of development of a child. The children do not need to acquire any special form of training to make admirable leaders in the society. Going through the theory, memories of my childhood flash through my mind. I remember instances where I would allocate duties to my siblings who were older than me. I would mobilize friends and neighbors to do general clean-up activities in the homestead. I would like to be a transformational leader. Transformational leadership is mostly applicable to the business environment. The traits that put transformational leaders above others are their high level of integrity, empathy, and humility. Their problem-solving skills coupled with conflict resolution techniques highly boost the growth of the enterprises they work in. They set precise goals and are able to motivate other employees who share in his beliefs (Leadership Styles, 2015). Transformational leaders are immensely productive. Jack Welch, a retired Chief Executive Officer of General Electric, was a leader of great valor. He is a result-oriented individual, who through his zeal and effort caused the rapid growth of the firm. I get inspired by his stories of how he turned the company around. He inspires me be to be more and achieve greater results. The school of

Research Design Primary Data Methods Marketing Essay

Research Design Primary Data Methods Marketing Essay To determine Britains substantial growth and unexploited opportunities in caffeine markets Starbucks can research on first-hand information that isnt readily available. Starbucks having access to a lot of information during its research has hired a research organization like Bruzzone. (Lamb C.W. et al, 2008). Also having to re-evaluate the current business activities, customers, product mix and store design to avoid closures and decline in the market share like in Australia and also America, in order to adapt in Britain they have carried out primary marketing research plan, to understand the consumer attitudes towards Starbucks, as follows: Surveys: The customers or the public are asked for their opinions. The demographics and segmentation taken into account. Examples include where the customers are asked questions about their frequency of coffee consumption. The answer being rated between criteria of options we gain a quantitative insight of information. Sampling: A method where the validity of information can be established by selecting a random sample of candidates from the entire population. Non- Probability Sampling involves selection on a subjective basis and not computable, Being more dependent on the researchers personal judgment. Starbucks can use this qualitative method to assess diverse information such as customer ethnicities, attitudes and brand equity. Also with convenience sampling Starbucks holds coffee tasting sessions, and mobile sampling methods which allow reaching a wider audience also to emphasize the culture and experience of Starbucks. (Starbucks, 2010) Personal Interviews: Involves the interviewer asking various questions from the interviewee to understand and gain an insight of their behavior and attitudes also called word association. Although it gives valuable qualitative information it may be impractical to be carried out, due to the large number of Starbucks coffee consumers, this research method being expensive and also time consuming. Consumer Panels: Starbucks developed sites like Facebook, YouTube, Starbucks RED and MyStarbucksIdea.com where customers can share their thoughts with other customers as well as current employees (Starbucks, 2010). Observations: The trained observer watches and records the behavior of the consumers. To identify and to understand the consumption patterns, Starbucks can use this method to learn more about the customers demographics, age, ethnicities, and their simple reactivity towards an advertisement having in mind the implication of  this research technique. Focus groups: Informal non-structured discussions among actual customers, qualitative research involving a moderator to understand the customers view point about the product, price and the brand equity. Starbucks carries out online focus groups to reach customers easily in various geographical locations. Secondary Data methods: Secondary Research involves the use of data previously collected for other purposes. Information includes documents within the company such as annual reports, also the reports of the stockholders, media results and reviews are basic qualitative information available online and in other means, that can be accessed easily with more convenience also its significantly cheaper than primary information. Other methods Include: Government records: include a lot of information about consumer market, companies websites and records etc. This information will of highly valuable use to Starbucks because it helps them make important decisions like whether to expand specialty operations to consumers at shops, travel, work etc. Usually a cost benefit analysis is carried out at this stage. Consumer Records: Starbucks keeps a record of customers personal and financial information which is acquired when customers purchase items using Starbucks Card or other forms. This data can be used to respond to customer service issues, create personalized promotions, and communicate with customers about their orders and/or specific job opportunities (Starbucks, 2010). Website: Starbucks uses information about the use of website like the ISP, domain, browser, what pages are requested etc. The purpose of this is to ease access and convenience to customers and identify what is of interest to them by the pages they visit. 1.1.5 ANALYZING AND PRESENTING THE FINDINGS Once the information is collected the next step is analysis which involves interpreting and drawing conclusions from the collected information. Clean the data- The researcher first organizes the data and analyze by using different techniques in marketing research. Cross Tabulation- Its the degree of influence the independent variable upon the dependent variable, e.g. In Starbucks variable can be how strong the brand value and image of the company to its customers. The researchers can use such sophisticated methods like regression analysis, hypothesis testing, and measures of association. Perceptual Mapping- After research customer views are plotted on a chart to understand the customers view on experience, product, price, etc. Starbucks can use this method to segment the market of customers. After the completion of Data Analysis the researcher must prepare a report or communicate the findings with the management. The marketing researcher must ensure the results are credible and justified. This step involves the conclusion of whether Starbucks would be profitable and retain its growth in England in the long-run, and also include recommendations on how it could be achieved to guide the management. (Lamb C.W. et al, 2008).

Analysis of Techno-terrorism :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers

Techno-terrorism and the Future of Civilization      Ã‚  Ã‚   "Modern terrorism, with sophisticated technological means at its disposal and the future possibility of access to biological and nuclear weapons, presents a clear and present danger to the very existence of civilization itself"--Justice Arthur J. Goldberg. Mr. Goldberg's statement expresses a valid concern that has become an alarming reality. As terrorists trade pistols for airplanes and pipe bombs for nuclear explosives, technology is rapidly increasing the power, range, and effectiveness of attacks that terrorists are able to execute.    We should expect that terrorist attacks will become even more lethal for a few reasons. First, the terrorists themselves are becoming more technologically adept. Second, governments such as Iraq and Syria are providing the wherewithal for attacks against new and more sophisticated targets. Third, religious radicals are establishing new boundaries for mass violence beyond what had been previously anticipated. Finally, the threshold for new forms of attack has already been breached--such as the attacks on technological infrastructure and poisonings of municipal water supplies. Techno-terrorism is the topic of discussion for this paper, however, it is also a topic for legislators, governments, communities, and families to evaluate when molding the world of tomorrow. The purpose of this paper is to examine terrorist ideology and to explore the technology of terrorism and what impact it may have for the future of civilization.    In order to better understand terrorism and the effect that technology may have, one needs to be cognizant of the different elements of terrorism. One dimension to start with is the general strategies of terrorism--how are terrorists trying to accomplish their goals. Tactics--a related component to strategies--stands out as the essence to terrorism. Other elements that will be covered include personal weapons and technological improvements that serve as an added bonus to personal weapons. Lastly, the latest, and most noxious, phenomenon of terrorism is mass destruction--the use of explosives and nuclear warfare.    When I mentioned general strategies of terrorism, I mean that general themes and patterns or lack thereof will be discussed. The summation of the following points explain the focus of terrorism on a unbiased scale. The first of five major themes is the idea that the terrorist act must always have a victim--someone or something harmed by the act--in order for the act to be utilitarian. Second, there are no real targets in which an enemy or adversary is terminated, only symbolic targets.

Education & life Essay

Education has always been an important part of my life. I have always believed that through hard work and dedication, I may be able to fulfill my dreams and aspirations. Furthermore, I am more inclined into becoming one of the most successful graduates our school has ever had. I want to be able to show the world how an individual like me can make a difference in life. My name is (insert your name here) in taking (NAME OF COURSE) at the (NAME OF THE UNIVERSITY). I consider myself to be a well rounded individual. As a student, I am proficient with subject relating to Math, History and Science (insert subjects where you’re good at). Unlike others, I never experienced any difficulty with Math, for I am able to easily interpret and solve mathematical equations. This great fascination also led to an inclination for Science. History, on the other hand, opens my knowledge to greater heights, for I am greatly interested in the circumstances that happened in the past. I believe that being knowledgeable about these things would help me grasp things that happen nowadays. Aside from my fascination for education, I am also active in my extra curricular activities. I am a well socialized person and loves dealing with everyone else. I believe that having many friends is one of my greatest achievements because I can relate to their ups and downs. Moreover, I also have passion in taking care animals more specifically marine animals. I was overwhelmed when I received my license in scuba diving and this boost my confidence even more. The said license gave me more opportunity to travel beneath the sea and meet my favorite mammals like dolphins and sharks. I am very proud of this achievement because the water world and animal kingdom are part of the society that is not yet congested by pollutions and negative activities as compared to the land. Receiving my license in scuba diving is not that easy. I undergo various exercises and lessons before I succeeded. This can be compare to life and education as well. If I will not work hard and follow the instructions I will end up drowning not only in water but in the pool of ignorance and misery. Education is best achieved when one works harder each day. Being admitted to your good university will serve as the path towards my dream of becoming (insert ambition here). I know that my skills and talents are not enough for me to be considered for a position in your school. All I know is that I am equipped with my determination to succeed and fulfill my dreams. From my experiences, excelling in both co-curricular and extra curricular activities is not easy. Success surpasses just the basics of passing all subjects in school and excelling in them. Success also requires much determination, dedication, hard work and prayers. Moreover, my dreams and aspirations do not end after graduation. I would use my experiences and knowledge to be of service to those in need. Furthermore, I would indulge myself in more programs that could help me become a better individual and a unique professional. I would apply everything that the (insert name of university here) imbibed in me and still yearn for more information and ideas that would help in the upheaval of our society. Being a graduate of this prestigious institution would also come to my advantage, for I may be able to inspire others to strive hard and become known in their chosen fields. My life is filled with numerous decisions, and choosing the (insert name of university here) is definitely the answer to my dreams.

The pardoners tale

The pardoners tale The Pardoner's Greed The pardoner, in Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Pardoner's Tale," is a devious character. He is a man with a great knowledge of the Catholic Church and a great love of God. However, despite the fact that he is someone whom is looked at with respect at the time, the pardoner is nothing more than an imposter who makes his living by fooling people into thinking he forgives their sins, and in exchange for pardons, he takes their money. His sermon-like stories and false relics fool the people of the towns he visits and make him seem as a plausible man, which is exactly what the pardoner wants. In fact, the pardoner is an avaricious and deceitful character whose driving force in life is his motto, "Radix malorum est cupiditas," which is Latin for "greed is the root of evil." The pardoner's entire practice is based upon his motto and is motivated entirely by greed. The Pardoner, from Geoffrey Chaucer's The Pardoner...The pardoner is supposed to forgive sins, however, he views h is position as a scheme to make money and turns it into a fraud. His excellent speaking skills allow him to turn this profession into a scam. He attracts the people with his storytelling and his sermons, which are pleasing to them, "By God, I hope I shal yow telle a thyng / That shal by reson been at youre liking," (457-58). One example of a sermon about his motto is the tale of the three rioters. This tale gives an ironic explanation related to the rioters deaths, due to greed and the pardoners practice of his profession, which is also driven by greed (Rossignol, 267). He tells the people what they would like to hear, so that he may pull them into his trap and later cheat them out...

How to Write Numbers (With as Little Confusion as Possible)

How to Write Numbers (With as Little Confusion as Possible) As with several other English grammar rules (capitalization of titles, were looking at you!) relating to how to write numbers will vary depending on the sources you use. For example, in AP style, you would spell out whole numbers up to (and including) nine but write the numerals for 10 and above. In Chicago style, you would spell out whole numbers up to (and including) one hundred but write the numerals for 101 and above. Alternatively, you can spell out whole numbers up to (and including) nine and use numerals for the rest. So, is there a way to remember the rules without having to consult a style book each time? Yes, but it depends on the nature of your writing and for whom you are writing. For example, if you are writing a dissertation that follows a particular style, it is best to consult the style book when any number comes up in the text. However, for general business writing, fiction and most nonfiction (unless its technical writing), there are some standard rules to follow, wh ich we will cover here.Rule #1Spell out whole numbers up to and including nine.Examples:Zerofour10110Rule #2Spell out numbers that begin a sentence unless it is a year. When doing so, avoid using and such as One hundred and one Dalmatians.Examples:1975 was a great year for music. One thousand dollars is a lot of money to pay for that watch. One hundred one Dalmatians.Rule #3When you have multiple numbers within the same sentence, consistency is key if the items are in the same category. If the items are in different categories, use numerals for one category and spell out the other.Examples:She bought the car that seats five instead of the minivan that seats nine.I read four books with over 300 pages each and two articles that were 12 pages each.Rule #4When numbers are next to each other in the sentence, it is best to write out one and use a numeral for the other in order to differentiate them.Example:We bought four 7-inch frames.

Non-pharmacological and pharmacological methods Essay

Non-pharmacological and pharmacological methods - Essay Example Fakhar et al. (2013) aimed to measure the pain anxiety related to change of dressing in admitted burn patients with age ranging from 18 to 60 years. The inclusion was only of 2nd degree burns (9-35% Total Body Surface Area-TBSA) and other burn degrees were excluded. Inclusion criteria meant people who are representative of the study and exclusion criteria meant people who may cause bias or hurt themselves. It is an experimental randomized clinical trial (RCT) with two groups. RCT is on the second top of hierarchy besides RCT can affect the decision-making if the sample size is calculated appropriately. RCTs are the useful trials that could admit the generalization of cause and affect relationships between intervention introduced and outcome measure. Sample size was estimated using power analysis to have a representative group. This power analysis helps to estimate the sample needed in experimental and control groups to support the findings as outlined by Burns and Grove (2009). The experimental group used jaw relaxation technique while the control group used usual medication care only without specifying it as this counted a weakness against the study. Randomization of allocation is done to ensure similarities in groups with a six months’ time period. Experimental group was taught to master jaw relaxation for 20 minutes and then asked to rate their pain anxiety level before dressing and again 15-20 minutes after the dressing.

INTERIM PROJECT REPORT Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

INTERIM PROJECT REPORT - Essay Example They have become an expensive and drag-back problem in many ways. Accidental though avoidable back injuries are responsible for thousands of hours of lost output in the place of work and millions of dollars in lost returns. If you add health related costs, that including employee reimbursement claims and medical care that includes a range from simple first aid to key surgeries, and the expenditures incurred by the World’s business and industries makes them slug behind. Project scope and introduction In reference to The National Safety Council 1990 "industrial accident specifics", job related accidents caused injuries to the back more than any other body parts that were studied during the1989 research study. It was noted that back injuries were responsible for twenty-two percent of all the reported cases. All industry stakeholders, including employers, workforce, customers and the economy in general are all enormously affected. (Daltroy, L.H., Iversen, M.D., Larson, M.G., Lew, R., Wright, E., Ryan, J., Zwerling, C., Fossel, A.H., Liang, M.H. (1997). A controlled trial of an educational program to prevent low back injuries. The New England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 337, Number 5, 322-328.) Guidance, education and preventive methods in work surroundings are not only a requirement for the wellbeing and safety of the workforce; they are also a legal obligation. Most countries’ labour laws require that employers meet the terms of the safety principles and policy in the place of work or they face huge fines. The aspect of plummeting the causes and frequency of back injuries in the places of work is not only critical for the well being of the workforce but also for the economic well-being of the business. As an employment prerequisite, each worker has the duty to work and act carefully on all jobs, at all times. An individual’s responsibility is to the business, their family and to an extent, themselves. (Amdam, R. P. (2010).  Insights into the S ustainable Growth of Business. Bradford: Emerald Group Pub.) Project Control It is very essential for a business like JIM’S CLEANING to make available a secure and healthy work environment. There are numerous situations where the regulations do not always comprise a specific situation hence you have to take time to constitute a level playing status and put into practice one’s own intelligence and education in order to carry out the task at hand without any injury incidents. . Any employee contributing to an injury has to explain what caused the injury thus the employer will be able to comprehend the reason and thwart any potential similar injuries. It is referred to as safety counselling. Counselling serves two essential roles: 1) To give details on how the worker contributed to the injury, hence getting to know what went wrong and how to go about the predicament. 2) To put into a document the actuality that the business is concerned about the safety of all workers and takes the necessary action to guarantee that injuries can be avoided through training. Safety counselling is not planned as a punitive action. It is simply a training means to make workers aware of what they did wrong and the procedures that should be taken to avoid similar injuries. With such kind of measures in place should an employee continue demonstrating hazardous activities or continue to defy
